Unless you’ve been living under a rock these last few years (no offense, Patrick Star), you know that the issue of legalizing same-sex marriages has been a hot topic in US politics for some time now. What’s more, this November, we as Marylanders will be a big part of the national debate when we vote whether or not to keep the gay marriage law passed by the General Assembly earlier this year.

These days there’s all this fiery rhetoric about either the government thrusting its unwanted authority into the sanctity of marriage or fanatical demagogues trying to persecute another law-abiding minority, but let’s put all that aside for a moment and consider what the whole debate is really about- to have a discussion without fervor, but reason.

Dialogue for the Future, in association with the Honors College, will be hosting three speakers to discuss the specifics of gay marriage at the Ulrich Lecture Hall in Tawes at 7 PM September 6. The first speaker will be Professor Dan Moller from the Philosophy department here at UMD, who will provide an objective overview on why people place so much importance in the institution of marriage. The other two speakers will be State Senators from the Maryland General Assembly, one who voted for the gay marriage law and one who voted against. Both the event and the post-event reception will be free, sponsored by the generosity of the Honors College. Hope to see you there!
