Invitation to NICBR “Exploring Careers in a Scientific Environment” Symposium

We would like to invite you and students at your school who are interested in careers in the medical, biological research, and/or bio-defense fields to join us for the “Exploring Careers in a Scientific Environment” Symposium on Thursday, November 15, 2012.

The event is sponsored by the National Interagency Confederation for Biological Research (NICBR), a partnership of government laboratories located on the Fort Detrick- Frederick National Laboratory for Cancer Research campus. The partners include the US Army, National Cancer Institute, Department of Homeland Security, Department of Agriculture, US Navy, National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The goal of the symposium is to present information about science-related career paths to students and educators.  The symposium will include presentations by the NICBR partners and will give an overview of research being performed at Fort Detrick , illustrating the types of careers that require science education.

The symposium will be held from 9:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m, and will be followed by optional tours of working NICBR laboratories until 4:00pm (pre-registration is required to attend a tour). Sign-in will begin at 8:30 a.m. During the morning, representatives from the various NICBR partner laboratories will introduce the types of potential career paths available at their agencies and  opportunities for internships and fellowships.  After the morning presentations, there will be an informal lunch period in which participants will have the opportunity to talk with the speakers. Participants will need to purchase their own lunches; a café is available on location for your convenience.  After lunch there will be a panel Q&A session where participants will have the opportunity to obtain more information on career development.

To ensure a safe environment for all participants, pre-registration on our website is required so standard “background checks” can be completed.  The website lists the tours that are available in the afternoon; participants must choose one tour and register for that tour.  Although the tours may be open to both US and non-US citizens, it is essential that everyone register early to provide sufficient time for the clearance process at the respective NICBR laboratory.

Driving directions to Fort Detrick and parking at the conference center are also on this site.

The deadline for registration is September 28, 2012.

You may contact Ms. Alice M Jones directly at alice.m.jones@.us.army.mil  if you would like more information. We look forward to seeing you at the NICBR “Exploring Careers in a Scientific Environment” Symposium!

Sincerely,
