Dining Services Opportunity - The Sustainable Food Working Group
The Sustainable Food
Working Group, formed last spring by Dining Services, is
comprised of administration from Dining Services and a really great
group of professors involved all around the University, from Food Safety
to Economics, and Nutrition to Livestock Management. The American food
system as a whole has a lot of room for improvement, and we are trying
to provide more sustainable food options for students on campus.
Since last year all the coffee is now certified organic and fair
trade, and in the dining halls at the salad bars produce will be labeled
by what farm it came from. We're making great headway, and there is
now the opportunity for students to join sub-committees that will be
chaired by the faculty members of the Working Group. Changing the food
offered at Maryland is equally about purchasing and money as it is about
educating students on why this is important and has to be done. It is a
really great opportunity for students to get involved with the inner
workings of Maryland, and see a change - there is an application that is
posted on the Dining Services website http://dining.umd.edu/greendining/getinvolved/sfwg-subcommittee-application.
