Contrary Venture Capital for university-based entrepreneurs

Contrary is a university-focused venture fund that invests in the dozen most promising teams from universities across the country each year. Backed by the founders of Facebook, Tesla, Reddit, and many more, we spend three months each summer building alongside our founders and facilitating access to the world’s best entrepreneurs and investors.

We bias towards action, holding 1:1 office hours and connecting you with people who will move the needle for you and your company. In previous summers, we've had friends like Ryan Hoover (ProductHunt), Leah Busque (TaskRabbit) and Andrew Chen (a16z) do just that.

The program has an exceptional track record, with ~90% of our teams raising follow-on capital, the majority of which come from top-tier funds including Sequoia, Founders Fund, and Kleiner Perkins.

Today, we're opening up applications to join us in San Francisco this summer. If you’re a university-based entrepreneur or recent grad building something for the long-run, we’d love to hear from you.

HONR 288A - Power, Representation and Public Policy - GenEd DSHS

HONR 288A - Power, Representation and Public Policy
David Karol
TuTh 12:30pm - 1:45pm

The purpose of this course is to expose students to classic and contemporary studies of American politics in order to make them better able to understand the policy process, who is represented in it, how and why. The exposure gained and resulting insights should prove useful to both those students continuing on political science and those who choose other majors, yet have a role to play as U.S. citizens. Often the academic study of American politics is broken up into narrow sub-fields with researchers (and classes) focused almost exclusively on voters and elections or government, with the latter often concentrating on one political institution, e.g. Congress or the Presidency.

By contrast, in this class we will bring materials from these diverse literatures bearing on representation and policymaking together to give students a holistic view of representation and the policy process in the contemporary U.S. Concerns about class, racial and gender disparities are incorporated in the readings. We will read scholarly articles and books; there is no textbook for this course. While the course is primarily focused on national policy-making, some topics covered, e.g. the discussion of “direct democracy” and the town meeting, elected judges and redistricting will connect to state and local politics as well. No prerequisite or background in political science is formally required, but an introductory course in American politics will be helpful.

Language Study Recruitment at HESP Seeks Children 2-3 Years Old

My name is Ning Hsu, I'm the project manager of the Language Fluency Lab at the Department of Hearing and Speech Sciences. We are currently recruiting child participants for a longitudinal study and we'd like to reach out to our university community to share this information.
We are currently recruiting three groups of children – who are 2 or 3 years old:
  • Children who have started to stutter within the past year.
  • Children who were late to start talking. These children usually have fewer than 50 words total or no two-word combinations at 24 months. Unfortunately, we are unable to enroll children with other developmental disabilities such as cognitive delays or suspected autism.
  • English monolingual children, who have mothers native speakers of English, and no concerns about their language development or any other development concerns.
Participation requires one visit per year to our office (located in LeFrak Hall) for three years. Children receive extensive developmental evaluations at no charge, and parents are provided with a written report documenting their child’s performance. Although our assessments follow a research protocol and are not individualized speech-language assessments, many of the tasks involved are those used in developmental evaluations. For each visit, families also receive monetary compensation and a small toy for the child.
The project is funded by federal grants from the National Institutes of Health and National Science Foundation awarded to Dr. Nan Bernstein Ratner, Ed. D., CCC-SLP, a Board-Certified Specialist in Child Language and Child Language Disorders, at the University of Maryland, and a co-investigator at Carnegie-Mellon University.
If you would like any additional information, please contact our team at languagefluencylab@umd.edu or Dr. Ratner at nratner@umd.edu. Thank you!

Campus Email Standard Task Force

A new campus email standard was issued in October 2019. The standard was
developed over the course of a year with input from the Information
Technology Council, the Division of Information Technology, and the Office
of General Counsel. It is designed to ensure compliance with federal and
state law and university policy when conducting university business by
email. Unfortunately, it has created some confusion. Therefore, the
Information Technology Council has been charged to seek faculty and staff
input to clarify the standard while ensuring it still satisfies compliance
requirements.

As a result, the Information Technology Council has created a task force
with the following members:

Pamela Abshire (Professor, ENGR)
Jun Chu (Graduate Student, SPHL)
Michel Cukier (Associate Professor, ENGR) (Chair)
Jason Farman (Associate Professor, ARHU)
Jen Gartner (Associate General Counsel, PRES/Office of General Counsel) (ex
officio)
Adam Grant (Director, VPR) (ex officio)
Dana Nau (Professor, CMNS)
Marcio Oliveira (Assistant Vice President, DIT) (ex officio)
William Regli (Professor, VPR)
Gerry Sneeringer (Chief Information Security Officer, DIT)
Kathy Thomas (Associate Registrar, SVPAAP)

As a first step, the task force is developing focus group sessions. Each
session is limited to 15 faculty/staff members to allow for effective
communication. More sessions will be added depending on demand. At least
one session is reserved for staff members only. The following link includes
the dates and times for the first sessions for faculty and staff members to
register:

https://www.eventbrite.com/e/email-standard-listening-sessions-tickets-88695000133

The task force is also assembling a website that will contain information
and an opportunity for faculty and staff members who cannot attend a focus
group session to provide feedback. The task force intends to make this
website available in advance of the focus group sessions.

Gilman Study Abroad Scholarship for Pell Grant Recipients - Info Jan 27 - Feb 7

Are you a Pell Grant recipient and U.S. citizen planning to study abroad in summer 2020, fall 2020, or AY 2020-21?

You may be eligible to apply for the U.S. State Department’s Gilman Scholarship, which provides up to $5,000 for study abroad and up to $8,000 if you are studying a critical need language. In the last three years, 107 UMD undergraduate students have won Gilman Scholarships!

Attend one of our upcoming information sessions and you'll get access to our ELMS Gilman resource site, which includes samples of successful application essays. We'll also let you know how you can earn an automatic $1,000 study abroad grant from the UMD Education Abroad office for completing a Gilman application! IMPORTANT: To receive the UMD EA grant, you must participate in your study abroad program.
