Global
Service in the Dominican Republic (BSGC338D/LASC369R): is a
3-credit winter study abroad program, which is based on the premise that
service-learning is a value response to social issues faced by
marginalized communities. This program was developed
with funding from the UMD Stamp Service-Learning Fellowship.
While living with local host families and engaging
in daily service and reflection activities, students will also
participate in seminars that focus on various aspects of Dominican life,
including: education, history, dance, food, and Dominican/Haitian
race relations.
The course is cross-listed with Latin American Studies, has been approved for
Diversity and Cultural Competency General Education and Global Poverty Minor elective. Intermediate-level Spanish recommended but not required.
The program fee is $2195 and includes tuition,
housing with host families, delicious meals, and excursions. Day trips
to Santo Domingo and SosĂșa Beach are included!
The Program Director, Malaika Serrano, will be at
the Study Abroad Fair on September 10 and is happy to answer any
questions about the program. To apply or learn more, please see:
