CECEI Position Announcement - English to Spanish Translator

The Center for Early Childhood Education and Intervention (CECEI) seeks an
energetic, detailed oriented, highly organized and innovative individual to support
the Children Study Their World (CSW) curriculum for 4-year olds. This curriculum
is being supported by professional development materials that allows teachers to
implement the curriculum with fidelity. These additional resources need to be
translated from English to Spanish, to allow for a greater range of accessibility.
CECEI will compensate the individual selected for this position a flat rate per
page translated.

Background on the Center for Early Childhood Education and Intervention
CECEI, based in the College of Education at the University of Maryland, is a joint
initiative between the Department of Counseling, Higher Education and Special
Education and the Department of Human Development and Quantitative
Methodology. The mission of CECEI is to conduct high-quality research on early
childhood education and early intervention programs in order to inform State and
Federal policy, to translate research into scalable education programs and best
practices, to build capacity in schools and communities, and to promote family
engagement in their children’s education.

English to Spanish Translator Responsibilities and Qualifications
● Translate from English to Spanish all CSW documents that are deemed
necessary for translation.
● Collaborate with PDC Project Manager on the translation of materials.

Minimum Qualifications:
● Experience in the translation of documents from English to Spanish.
● Evidence of excellent oral and written communication skills in both
Spanish and English
● Evidence of strong organizational skills.
● Evidence of technology skills (Google Apps for education, Microsoft
Office, etc.).

Participate in a Language Learning and tVNS Study! Last chance – study ends at Spring Break!

Two studies are recruiting participants! Complete questionnaires and computerized cognitive and foreign-language learning tasks. Some sessions will also involve transcutaneous vagus nerve stimulation (tVNS).
·         Vocabulary/Grammar5 sessions on 5 consecutive days
o   Also involves heart rate monitoring

Volunteers Around the World is conducting a service trip to Peru this summer!

The dates of the trip are May 27th to June 11th and is perfect for pre-health students!  This is an incredible opportunity to work alongside physicians to provide basic medical care to underserved communities abroad. Volunteers will take vitals, shadow doctors, distribute medications, learn about basic pharmacology, and prepare a public health lesson to teach to children. You will also have opportunities during free days to explore a new country and fully immerse yourself in the culture. This is a 2-week intensive trip valuable to those who want to get some hands on volunteering experience while also having fun exploring a new country.

The Master’s Certification Program (MCERT) is a one-year graduate-level teacher preparation program that leads to elementary, middle school, secondary or preK-12 teacher certification and a Master of Education (M.Ed.) degree. Grade level/content area specializations include Art, Dance, Elementary Education, English, Mathematics, Middle School Math and Science, Physical Education, Secondary Sciences (Agriculture, Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science, Earth/Space Science, Physics), Social Studies, TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages), and World Languages (Chinese, French, German, Italian, Latin, Russian, Spanish).

McGowan Institute For Regenerative Medicine Summer School and Internship Program

The McGowan Institute for Regenerative Medicine is pleased to announce its Sixth Annual Regenerative Medicine Summer School June 16-22, 2019.  The program is designed to provide a week-long didactic and hands-on learning experience addressing the science and engineering related to the multidisciplinary field of Regenerative Medicine.  The program targets undergraduates who will have completed their 3rd year of study. However, exceptional candidates who will have completed their 1st or 2nd year of undergraduate study will also be considered.

We are also pleased to announce that through the generosity of donors and sponsors, this year’s program is entirely free.  Additionally, this year, we will be offering 10 paid 8-week research internships in the laboratories of McGowan Institute Faculty.  Participation in the Summer School includes all accommodations, meals, coursework, laboratory experiences, social activities, and networking/career development events during the one-week program.  The stipend for the 8-week internship is $3,000.  

Last year’s class featured twenty bright and eager students from across the country; we look forward to another positive experience this summer! We hope you will be able to join us! Apply today!

Hosts Needed for EDGE (Experience Diversity, Growth, & Excellence) Overnight Stay Program

The search is on for talented students who desire to assist with planning and implementation of the EDGE program and host a student overnight.

Each Spring, the Office of Undergraduate Admission hosts admitted students from underrepresented populations on campus during the EDGE (Experience Diversity, Growth, & Excellence) overnight stay program. This successful overnight stay program helps to attract talented students to the University of Maryland by showcasing current students’ experiences and opportunities offered.

EDGE will host 2 overnight stay programs to be conducted on April 4 and April 11, 2019. The EDGE Host Application is now live and can be found here. 

Applications should be submitted in PDF format by Wednesday, February 13th at 5:00 p.m.

The Jimenez-Porter Writers’ House is proud to award the fourteenth annual Literary Prize for Undergraduate Writing at LITFEST on THURSDAY, May 2, 2019. Winners must attend & read at LITFEST to collect.

Awards:
1st place award (1 each in poetry and fiction):  $150.00
2nd place award (1 each in poetry and fiction):  $100.00
3rd place award (1 each in poetry and fiction):  $50.00

How, or Guidelines for Submissions: 
Ø  Poetry submissions must not exceed 3 pages, maximum 1 poem per page.  Fiction submissions must not exceed 3000 words.

PhiDE Rush

We want you to rush Phi Delta Epsilon! PhiDE is an international medical
fraternity with a premedical chapter here at UMD. Our fraternity was founded
in 1904 under the guiding principles of Philanthropy, Deity, and Equity. We
are a co-ed, professional fraternity, and there are over eighty active
chapters around the country with 30,000 members worldwide in 7 different
countries. Our members have an overall average of 92% acceptance rate into
medical school. We truly are a close knit family and are great for networking and

Gamer Symphony Orchestra Spring Welcome Social - 2/3

This Sunday come have fun, play games and learn more about the Gamer Symphony
Orchestra! We are the first collegiate orchestra to exclusively perform video game music.
We’ve previously played pieces from The Legend of Zelda, Halo, Ace Attorney, and many
more!

Our Spring Welcome event is open to everyone . We will have board and card games to play,
but please feel free to bring video games as well. If you are interested in being a member of our orchestra or choir this semester, this is a fantastic opportunity to learn more about joining the GSO.

The event will be on Sunday, February 3rd from 4:30 - 8:00 in the CSPAC Band Room. Enter
the doors closest to the UMD Shuttle stop at the Clarice, take the first left, and walk down the
hall to reach the band room.

Community Health Gap Year Fellowship Opportunity

Project Horseshoe Farm offers a 13-month gap-year fellowship program for recent college graduates and undergraduate internship opportunities of varying duration. Alumni have expressed how transformative their Fellowship experience was and have gone on to top medical schools, graduate programs, and nonprofit organizations across the US. Our organization is a growing part of the community, with ever-expanding Enhanced Independent Living Housing Programs, Adult Day Programs, and K-12 Youth Programs run by the Fellows year-round.

Columbia Business School is seeking outstanding applications for the 2019 Summer Research Internship program.

 The highly selective program provides an intellectually stimulating environment and introduces the interns to the world of business research.  Under the guidance of Columbia Business School’s leading faculty, interns will take an active role on a research project in one of the following areas: accounting, economics, finance, marketing, management, decision sciences, operations, and data analytics.  This is a multi-disciplinary program and candidates from all majors are encouraged to apply. 

The internship program is designed for undergraduate students at the end of their sophomore or junior year and first year Masters students.  Exceptional students from other classes are considered on a case-by-case basis.
Most of the top interns have gone to leading MS and PhD programs in Economics, Finance, Computer Science, Management, Operations Research, and Data Science. Many have been selected to join CBS as full-time Research Associates or admitted to one of CBS' PhD programs.
All prospective interns must have the following qualifications:
·         Enthusiasm for research, intellectual curiosity, and excellent communications skills
·         The ability to learn new concepts and tools and apply them to your projects

Skills for Quantitative Projects
·         Most Economics, Finance, and Accounting (and economics based management and marketing) projects require:
o   Strong background or major in econometrics and statistics
o   The ability to run regressions using statistical packages such as STATA or R
·         Quantitative projects in Management, Marketing or DRO require:
o   Background or major in mathematics, computer science, or engineering
o   Strong programming background (C/C++, Python, R, or Matlab, etc.)
·         Some projects may require the ability to do text processing using Python or Perl familiarity with basic machine learning algorithms

Skills for Behavioral projects in Management or Marketing
·         Interest in behavioral experiments – background or major in Psychology
·         Knowledge of SPSS, some projects may require knowledge of Python or R

The program runs from May 28, 2019 – July 26 or August 2, 2019 (end dates to be determined).  On-campus housing and a stipend will be provided.
