Fabulous opportunity to join a distinguished
crowdsourcing effort as Paid Participant for DigitalGlobe GeoHIVE!
Connection made available for you through Megan Williams, a terrific and
talented Federal Semester UMD alumna now working for
GeoHIVE.
Her colleague Sam Birnbaum (very impressive and
excited about this initiative) visited with Dr. Burton, Director of
Federal and Global Semester and Individual Studies, last week to talk
about this terrific opportunity!
In short: They will train you (virtually) to look
at satellite imagery and discern buildings/etc. or to confirm imagery
already identified.
You work on your own time, remotely! And learn
amazing skills for your resume. They will pay you for your work! And
excellent workers can gain paid summer internships with GeoHIVE!
Clients for their work include homeland security related organizations, etc. This is a cutting edge skill set!
More details from Sam Birnbaum:
I am excited to share a new opportunity! Join
DigitalGlobe’s GeoHIVE community and gain resume-building experience in
geospatial techniques, contribute to disaster recovery, and earn money
by crowdsourcing geospatial problems. DigitalGlobe
is a leading global provider of commercial high resolution satellite
imagery (https://www.digitalglobe.com/).
GeoHIVE is a DigitalGlobe crowdsourcing community that provides
solutions to geospatial problems. Participants
learn techniques and terminologies used by professional geospatial
analysts, and are paid to complete a variety of computer-based tasks.
These tasks include tagging points of interest in satellite imagery,
drawing territorial boundaries, and voting on the
accuracy of tags downloaded from open sources. Members of the HIVE can
work whenever, wherever, and however much they want. No prior
experience or specialized software is necessary to join!
You can participate on an unpaid test campaign by visiting
http://www.tomnod.com/. Click “Start Searching” and then click the “X” in the top right corner.
How do I join?
If you are interested in joining the paid GeoHIVE community, please email
geohive@digitalglobe.com, with "UMD Student Interested in Joining GeoHIVE" in the subject line.
How are members of the HIVE compensated?
Participants receive cash payments and/or
incentives based on the quantity and accuracy of their work. Regular
users earn roughly $10-12 per hour. Incentives include but are not
limited to the following:
·
Financial payments up to $1,000
·
Summer internships at DigitalGlobe
·
Language describing your GeoHIVE experience for use on resumes and cover letters
·
T-shirts, sweatshirts, coffee mugs, and lanyards
·
Cellphone and computer backgrounds of high-res satellite images sourced by DigitalGlobe satellites
I hope you will take advantage of this opportunity to hone your skills while helping to solve real-world problems.
