Marketing Chair and Internal Communications Position Open for Society of Asian Scientists and Engineers (SASE) - UMD Chapter



The SASE Chapter at the University of Maryland is excited to offer a marketing chair position for the Society of Asian Scientists and Engineers Northeastern Regional Conference committee!

The Society of Asian Scientists and Engineers (SASE) was founded in November 2007 to help Asian heritage scientific and engineering professionals achieve their full potential.

The collegiate chapter of SASE at the University of Maryland has been chosen this upcoming year to host the regional conference in February. The marketing chair position provides a great opportunity to develop essential professional experience for students pursuing careers in marketing and business. Additional available positions will be listed below.

1. Marketing chair
a) Develop innovative promotional marketing strategies.leading up to the conference.
b) Work jointly with the webmaster to maintain website and strong social media presence.
c) Partner with graphic designer to create promotional advertisements, banners, and fliers.

3. Internal communications chair/webmaster
a) Create the Conference 2019 website and be the main point of contact
within the committee for updating relevant information onto the website.
b) Ensure that all email communication is up to date and monitored.
c) Secure support from fellow on-campus cultural and professional
organizations.

Gilman Scholarship for Study Abroad - Up to $5,000

Latino Community Liaison Internship, Community Engagement Interns Program



Office of Community Engagement (OCE) at the University of Maryland

Description​: A Latino Community Liaison Intern is needed to participate in events and provide the Office of Community Engagement staff with administrative and executive support in the implementation of projects that harness UMD resources to enhance quality of life in Prince George’s County, MD. The internship is not paid. However, interns will gain valuable work experience and are encouraged to coordinate receiving academic credit. The Latino Community Liaison Intern will work 10 hours per week throughout the semester. Hours are flexible.

Responsibilities​: The intern will work with a wide variety of stakeholders in local government, business, non-profit organizations, and the campus community to assist in planning​, implementing ​and evaluating​ community engagement projects for the Spanish-speaking community. Project areas include, but are not limited to, collaboration between the University of Maryland and the City of College Park, UMD’s Partnership with Paint Branch Elementary School, and projects involving UMD’s Center for Educational Partnership in Riverdale, MD. Assignments to project areas will be kept in the intern’s skills and interests. The intern will also help the Office of Community Engagement with general outreach at campus events and perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications: ​The Latino Community Liaison Intern must be fluent in Spanish and English and be able to successfully collaborate with Office staff and community members to plan partnership activities. Successful applicants will exhibit excellent organization and communications skills, attention to detail, and an enthusiasm for building positive relationships between the University of Maryland and our surrounding community. Familiarity with and connections to UMD student groups and Student Government Association (SGA) is a bonus; access to own transportation is preferred.
Students in all majors with the requisite skills and who are in good academic standing will be considered.

Prerequisites​: Interns must be a current University of Maryland graduate or undergraduate student. Interns are expected to have a professional work ethic, manage their time well, and must be disciplined and self-motivated.

Internship Credit​: Although students are not required to obtain academic credit, OCE encourages students to consult with an academic advisor to see whether internship credit is available through their academic department. If credit is not available through the student’s home department, internship credit may be available through other departments. Students must satisfy the specific internship requirements of the supporting academic department to earn credit, which typically involves 120 hours of work, a significant writing assignment, and an activities log and letter of evaluation from the on-site supervisor. Students are responsible for covering the tuition-related implications of accepting the internship. The Office of Community Engagement cannot pay for course credits.

Graphic Design Intern, Community Engagement Interns Program

Description​: A Graphic Design Intern is needed to enhance the Office of Community Engagement’s on and off-campus identity and better promote campus efforts to provide resources that enhance quality of life in the surrounding Prince George’s County community. The internship is not paid. However, interns will gain valuable work experience and are encouraged to coordinate receiving academic credit. The Graphic Design Intern will work 10 hours per week throughout the semester. Hours are flexible.

Responsibilities​: The intern will help develop graphics, layouts, fliers, logos, brochures and content for the Office’s programs, initiatives, and website (www.oce.umd.edu). The intern will also assist the Office of Community Engagement with general outreach at campus events and perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications: ​The Graphic Design Intern must have an excellent eye for art and able to coalesce complex topics into succinct graphic layouts. Photography skills preferred to help the Office document campus events and projects. Familiarity with InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop and Dreamweaver is a bonus. Art and Graphic Design students are strongly encouraged to apply though students in all majors with the requisite skills will be considered.

Prerequisites​: Interns must be a current University of Maryland graduate or undergraduate student. Interns are expected to have a professional work ethic, manage their time well, and must be disciplined and self-motivated.

Communications & Media Relations Intern, Community Engagement Interns Program

Description​: A Communications & Media Relations Intern is needed to support the Office of Community Engagement’s online presence and promote campus efforts to provide resources that enhance quality of life in the surrounding Prince George’s County community. The internship is not paid. However, interns will gain valuable work experience and are encouraged to coordinate receiving academic credit. The Communications Intern will work 10 hours per week
throughout the semester. Hours are flexible.

Responsibilities​: The intern will collaborate with the Social Media Coordinator to develop written content for the campus community engagement website (http://www.oce.umd.edu), blog, newsletter, and other program-related publications as needed. The intern will document campus community engagement news and events through written summaries, press releases, and photographing projects and events. The intern will also assist in maintaining the Office of Community Engagement’s social media and marketing accounts (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, MailChimp, etc.) as well as provide general outreach at campus events and help with other duties as assigned.

Qualifications: ​The Communications & Media Relations Intern must be an excellent writer and able to summarize complex topics into succinct articles. Photography skills or an “artistic eye” is preferred to help the Office document campus events and projects. Familiarity with Dreamweaver, InDesign and Photoshop is a bonus. Journalism and Communications students are strongly encouraged to apply though students in all majors with the requisite skills will be considered.
