The College of Arts and Humanities (ARHU) at the University of Maryland invites applications for a Summer Research Opportunity Program (SROP), which is a gateway to Graduate education at Big Ten Academic Alliance universities. The goal of this intensive eight-week program is to increase the number of underrepresented students who pursue Graduate study and research careers. This year's ARHU SROP will be directed by Professor Daryle Williams (Department of History) and will entail research for the project "Enslaved.org: Peoples of the Historical Slave Trade," an open-access digital resource generously funded by the The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation.

The 2021 SROP researcher will join this effort, working closely with project partners to develop a suite of datasets to be published in the Journal of Slavery and Data Preservation as well as an accompanying twitter feed and podcasting series #behindthedata. Successful applicants will receive a modest stipend and will work closely with Co-PI Daryle Williams for 10-15 hours each week, attend weekly Enslaved.org team meetings, and participate in seminars.

The 2021 program dates are Monday, June 7, 2021 - Friday, July 30, 2021. For best consideration, please apply by March 1, 2021, by sending a Curriculum Vitae and a letter of application to Dr. Ralph Bauer (bauerr@umd.edu) and to Dr. Daryle Williams (daryle@umd.edu) For questions, please email Ralph Bauer or Daryle Williams.
