Mithril Turtle Discussion Series: 'Protecting the Dragon's Hoard: A Nanotechnology Approach'

Mithril Turtle events continue with a talk by Ray Phaneuf from the UMD Material Science and Engineering Department entitled 'Protecting the Dragon's Hoard:  A Nanotechnology Approach'

Sept 11.  2:00 PM

Anne Arundel Lounge.  Protecting the Dragon’s Hoard – a Nanotechnology Approach.

Ray Planeuf, UMD, Material Sciences

In Tolkien’s book _The Hobbit_, the Dragon Smaug had a huge hoard of treasure, including many items made from precious metals.  But metals when exposed to the high temperature, sulfurous breath of the dragon rapidly tarnish, and lose their luster.  In this talk I’ll discuss how we are using a nanotechnology approach, “atomic layer deposition” to protect precious metals like silver from tarnishing in corrosive environments like Smaug’s cavern under the Lonely Mountain, for hundreds of years.

The Mithril Turtle is UMD's celebration of the 60th anniversary of Lord of the Rings.
