"Bike Count" Project Needs You

UMD is rapidly becoming a living lab for sustainability where students participate in the process of creating a sustainable city right here in College Park. The Office of Sustainability and the Department of Transportation Services are hoping you might get involved with one of our largest living lab projects to date.

We are looking for students to conduct a “Bike Count” during four consecutive days in October to collect data that will help us improve bicycle infrastructure, develop educational programs, and generally make it easier and safer to bike to/from/on campus.

You can be involved in the following ways:

-students would sign up for shifts to collect data (ex. male/female cyclist, helmet/no helmet, on street/sidewalk) at nine locations on and near campus. It’s a great and easy way for new students to get involved and learn more about their new home!

 – A team of students would coordinate the bike count by developing an online survey for volunteers to use to collect data, managing the schedule of volunteers, analyzing data, and reporting findings after the count.

– A different team would develop a mobile app that could be used for future bike counts. Of course, we’d be happy to use the app for this October’s bike count if students can develop one that quickly!

If you would like to be involved, please contact Mark Stewart in the Office of Sustainability at stewartm@umd.edu
We hope to set up a meeting with potential project leaders and app developers in September to plan for the October count.

Thank you,

Mark
