Join Campus Recreation Services’ Maryland Adventure Program on an expedition to the remote natural areas of Costa Rica and Panama. The trip will be based in and near the Parque Internacional La Amistad, a unique International Peace Park that unites the villages and people on the borders of Costa Rica and Panama.
On this expedition, we will be working with International Peace Park Expeditions, a multi-disciplinary non-profit organization, (www.peaceparkexpeditions.org) to learn about the concept of a peace park and its role in promoting community development, conservation and responsible economic growth through agriculture and eco-tourism. You’ll be exposed to sustainable and organic agricultural practices that are common in the area and learn about the fair trade market for products such as coffee and produce that American’s consume every day. Students will be immersed in the culture as they work side by side with local community organizations, live with homestay families, participate in a community fútbol game, and enjoy community fiestas.
In addition to working in the local communities, students will quench their thirst for adventure with two overnight backpacks to the summits of the highest peaks in both countries-Cerro Chirripó in Costa Rica and Volcán Barú in Panama. Students should be in good physical condition (able to hike 11 miles) and have a love of being and working outdoors. No experience is necessary, just a willingness to try.
A nonrefundable $300 deposit is needed to secure your spot; you can register online or in person at MAP. The registration deadline is Friday, November 9.
