Honors Brown Bag Lunch Special Event: Weaving a Web of People

Please come join us this Thursday for an Honors Brown Bag Lunch Special Event: Weaving a Web of People
A discussion hosted by Adam Publicover and Dr. Marsha Guenzler-Stevens

Andrew Publicover is a proud University Honors alum.  Since graduating from Maryland in 2006, he has been lucky enough to work for the U.S. Department of State.  Through the Woodrow Wilson Foundation's Pickering Fellowship, Andrew completed an internship at the U.S. Embassy in Beijing, China, and worked part-time in the State Department's Office of Chinese Affairs while earning a master's degree in China Studies at the Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies.  After entering the Foreign Service as a career diplomat in 2008, Andrew worked as a consular officer adjudicating applications for U.S. visas in Shanghai, China.  In 2011, he served as staff aide to the U.S. ambassador in Kabul, Afghanistan.  He is currently a Watch Officer in the State Department Operations center, working rotating shifts to provide 24/7 coverage of breaking news and crises, and 24/7 communications support, for the Secretary of State and senior officials.  In his next assignment, Andrew hopes to return overseas and serve as a political officer at a U.S. embassy in Asia, reporting on political developments and advocating U.S. policy.

At Maryland, Andrew majored in Government and Politics and studied Chinese, French, and Spanish.  Outside the classroom, he spent time as an HONR 100 instructor and coordinator, a presiding officer on the University Honor Council, a tour guide with Maryland Images, a student employee in the Office of Campus Programs, and a volunteer at the Catholic Student Center.  He is originally from Crofton, Maryland.

Dr. Guenzler-Stevens currently serves as Director of the Stamp Student Union, Campus Programs and Multicultural Involvement and Community Advocacy at the University of Maryland—a position she has held since 1992. She received her doctoral degree from Maryland in Higher Education Administration, Policy, and Planning and is also an affiliate faculty member of the College Student Personnel (CSP) graduate program.

During her tenure at Maryland, Guenzler-Stevens has mentored countless graduate and undergraduate students. In 1995 she was named one of the university’s “Women of Influence” and in 2004 was awarded the staff award for Extraordinary Public Service to the University and Greater Community by the University System of Maryland Board of Regents. She continues to be active in national professional associations, having recently served as the Program Chair for the 2007 ACPA/NASPA Joint Meeting in Orlando.
