West Coast Study Tour - August 2019

The West Coast is becoming an increasingly popular destination for UMD graduates. Since 2011 the West Coast immersion experience has been offered annually to connect students with West Coast employers, and experience the beauty and wonders of the Pacific Northwest. Below are the frequently asked questions:

Which companies are included?:  Previous classes have visited Amazon, Microsoft, Tableau, Starbucks, Tesla, Facebook, Google, Salesforce, LinkedIn, Nike, Intel, Adidas, Twitter, Boeing, Netflix, etc. The exact companies for 2019 depend on availability.

Why should I go?

1. Fantastic networking opportunity -  The trip is packed with networking opportunities. Students have the opportunity to interact with a variety of different industry experts, many of which are UMD alumni. In addition to hearing the story behind their career paths, students are able to develop real connections with these individuals. In many cases, the tour has facilitated student career development.  The  experience has been described as a “phenomenal learning experience,” “lifetime experience,” and a “great networking opportunity.”

2. Get a first hand 'feel' of companies and the culture on the West Coast - find out what it feels like to work and live on the West Coast, and get a first hand 'feel' of the companies and their culture.

3. Credits - the credits can be used to meet the University Diversity requirement (Plural Societies) or as an upper level elective for most majors. The theme of the course is diversity, inclusion and innovation. This would be listed as a Fall 2019 course.  In addition to the meeting times during the trip, the course will meet for approximately 12 hours during the Fall semester.   A one credit hour option is available for students not interested in using the class to meet a degree requirement.

4. The Alaskan Experience - Students love the Alaska component of the study tour. Alaska serves as a perfect example of the cultural, geographic, and economic diversity that is present in the Pacific Northwest. In visiting this destination, the trip aims to expand student mindsets.  Alaska is home to some of the most diverse and interesting wildlife, making it a prime spot for adventure and the exploration.  Alaska is the only state where indigenous peoples still live on ancestral lands.  By the time you leave Alaska you will clearly understand why Alaska is frequently labeled as the “Last Frontier,” and why no other state in the nation resembles Alaska.

Airfare is not included and the estimated airfare is $550-750.
