Academic
Achievement Program’s Tutoring and College Study Skills components
provides tutoring and Supplemental Instruction for a variety of
University courses that utilizes a small group, collaborative
learning environment. The program is looking for candidates who exhibit the following qualifications:
- Earned a grade of B or better in the course or a related/similar course
- Cumulative GPA of 2.75 or higher
- A firm grasp of the subject area
- Good interpersonal communication skills and ease in relating to people from varying educational, cultural, and social backgrounds.
- Good level of responsibility, reliability, and punctuality.
- Appropriate and professional behavior at all times.
SI leaders usually have a time commitment ranging from 6-7 hours per week which includes the following:
- Participate a two-part training session at the beginning of the semester
- Attending the lecture portion of the course you are tutoring:
- BSCI 189I--Dr. Presson's MWF 11-11:50 am lecture (SI leader vacancy)
- PHIL 140--Dr. Kerstein's TuTh 9:30-10:20 am lecture (SI leader vacancy)
- Conducting two-fifty minute SI sessions per week
- Turn in necessary paperwork on a weekly basis
- Attend staff meetings twice a month
- Observe another SI leader's session
SI
leaders can earn hourly compensation (with the pay-scale starting at
$8.00/hour, based on previous experience and your student status) or
institutional credit through EDUC388, Guided Experiences
in College Teaching. This seminar course meets once a week and covers strategies for becoming effective peer facilitators. A
