The National
Society of Black Engineers is one of the largest student run
organization. The mission of NSBE is to help increase the number of
minority engineering and STEM majors that graduate by helping them grow
professionally, personally and academically by providing the support
system needed to excel in the engineering field, especially as an
underrepresented minority. I have been a member of the University of
Maryland Chapter of NSBE ( known as the Black Engineers Society) ever
since my freshman year and I can truly say that my academic and
professional achievements are largely thanks to what I have learned from
NSBE,
Every
year there is a NSBE National Convention where chapters across the
country attend. It is an incredibly empowering experience to see that
many young, minority STEM majors all in one place. This year the
convention will be in California. In the past our chapter has always
been able to take a lot of members to experience the wonderful
opportunities that National Convention provides. However, this year we
are in danger of not being able to take any members because the high
cost of travel is a burden that our chapter finances just cannot meet.
In an effort to raise money we have created a fundraising site through the university.
