MaryPIRG is a student-run and student-funded non-profit that works on a variety of public interest issues. One of the issues we’re working on is the Bottle Bill in Maryland.
As a state, Maryland has pretty terrible recycling rates – lower than
the national average. However, by implementing a Bottle Bill (a 5 or 10
cent redeemable deposit on cans and bottles), we can actually triple our
recycling rates! We currently use about 4 billion bottles but only
recycle 1 billion.
We’re hosting a stream clean up on Saturday, March 29 to not only
give a little back to our campus, but to raise awareness about the
Bottle Bill. At our last stream clean up, we collected over 1062 many
cans and bottles, which would’ve been $53.10 if Maryland had a Bottle
Bill.
We’re working with a bunch of different student groups and would love to see you there! We’ll be by the View and Lot 11 from 12 – 3. We’re planning on kicking off at 12 with some words from the Mayor of College Park and refreshments.
Again, this a great opportunity to give back to campus and get some community service under your belt!
Can you make it? Please let me know so we know how many supplies to prepare by RSVPing on our Facebook event page!
