More information:
In the past decade, American attitudes on gay and lesbian rights-- such as same-sex marriage, adoption, and military service—0 have shifted tremendously, with polls showing unprecedented levels of support. But what about the "T" in "LGBT"? Beyond the Classroom is proud to present this special seminar by Andy Bowen (UMD ‘08). Andy will share the struggles and recent achievements for transgender rights, as well as her journey from UMD college student to professional activist in Washington, D.C.

Andy is pursuing a Master of Social Work from Catholic University (’14); and received a BA in History, Certificate in Women's Studies, and Lorde-O'Leary Award (for service to the LGBT community) from the University of Maryland, College Park in 2008.

At NCTE, Andy works on behalf of trans people’s access to accurate identity records, health insurance, and shelter. She helped lead the efforts to pass the Deoni Jones Birth Certificate Equality Amendment Act, which eases D.C.'s birth certificate and name change processes for transgender people; and the recently-announced policy giving transgender people in D.C. access to insurance coverage for transition-related care.
