Discussion: Excelling as a Minority in the Professional World

Hello!

We hope you had an awesome Spring break! We're sorry we had to cancel the Professional Development Seminar back in February due to the weather. However, we have a created a make-up program for you!

This Thursday, March 27th from 5-6:30pm we will be hosting an event called
Excelling as a Minority in the Professional World
in Benjamin Banneker of the Stamp Student Union.

This event is cosponsored with the Black Engineers Society (BES), the Black Political Student Association (BPSA), and the College Park Chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP).

The purpose of the event is to promote professional development in the minority community. We will have an open panel discussion of minority professionals to talk about the grits of their academic and professional journeys. We want to ask the hard questions, like "Have you ever had a bad interview?" "Did advisors REALLY help your academic life?" "How does one recognize racism in the workplace and what should you do about it?"

Afterward, we will be holding an informal workshop where you can get
personal advice on resumes, cover letter, personal statements, interviewing tips, and more!
These people are here to give you personal attention, so take advantage of it.

If you didn't know, it's INTERNSHIP/JOB SEASON!! You should have applied/be applying for something to do over the summer. We'll be notifying you of some with deadlines still open and of databases where you can search for your internship of choice. This is your perfect chance to get help with those applications. Feel free to bring in a job description or ask for any general advice.

We hope to see you there! Dress is casual.
