Volunteers needed to hang out with awesome kids!

CARing Kids is a mentoring program that works with elementary school students from Langley Park, Md. Every Thursday from 3:00-5:30 at Hope Lutheran Church (across the street from campus), university volunteers and children play outside, read books and help improve math and communication skills.

Langley Park is a densely populated Washington D.C. community that experiences a high rate of unemployment, drug use and gang violence. CARing (Children-At-Risk) aims to boost self-esteem and provide role models for the children so as to learn from an early age the value of a university education. Volunteers are personally matched with a child to give one-on-one attention in a large group. CARing Kids is a semester-long commitment to provide consistency and reliability for the kids.

Hope Lutheran Church is located at 4201 Guilford Dr., College Park, Md. 20740 (next to the Catholic Student Center and behind Commons 7--a short walk from Stamp Student Center and McKeldin Library).

All are welcome! Skills in Spanish are highly valued, but not necessary at all. No prior experience with tutoring is necessary.

Please contact student director Maddie Tallman at mtallman@terpmail.umd.edu or by phone at 301-471-6109 for more information or to express interest.
