University of Maryland Fall/Spring Research Technicians

The Hamby lab in the Department of Entomology at the College Park campus is seeking a research technician to assist in field and laboratory studies on the biology and management of insect populations in various agricultural crops. During the Fall and Spring semesters, work is primarily lab based and will include weekly Drosophila colony maintenance, processing field samples, data entry, and assisting with Drosophila laboratory studies. There will be opportunities to learn some microbiology and molecular biology skills. Field work, which is conducted in summer, involves planting and maintaining experimental plots, harvesting crops, trapping insects, and collecting data to evaluate different pest management strategies.

All studies will be conducted on campus, as well as on several UMD research Farm Facilities. Training and transportation will be provided, and technicians will work cooperatively with other lab members. Candidates should demonstrate an enthusiasm for working both outdoors, sometimes under harsh environmental conditions, and in a sterile laboratory environment; an attention to detail and careful data collection skills are important. Candidates should be available for a minimum of 10 hours per week. Wage commensurate with experience, and course credit is available.

Required: 18 years or older; MD driver’s license; background in biology and experience in entomology or agriculture or molecular biology is preferred but not necessary.

Interested applicants should submit your resume, cover letter, unofficial transcripts, and any questions to Maggie Lewis at mtlewis@umd.edu. Review of applications will begin immediately and continue until the position is filled. For more information about the Hamby lab, please visit our website, hambylab.weebly.com.
