We
are Terps Embracing Immigrants, a group participating in UMD’s Do Good
Challenge, a university-wide social entrepreneurship competition. Our
mission is to help immigrants in the local area develop a strong
community with each other and to encourage Maryland students to be
welcoming and supportive of immigrant groups.
Our community is
home to very diverse neighborhoods, including College Park, Riverdale,
Silver Spring, and Langley Park, with over 40% of residents being
foreign-born. We want to fight back against the growing anti-immigrant
rhetoric that we see on the news and embrace the diversity and rich
cultural heritage right in our own backyard.
The Long Branch
Community Center in Silver Spring holds an annual Unity Day Festival to
achieve the same mission as us: to build community among the various
different immigrant and cultural groups in the neighborhood. We wanted
to extend their efforts and expand the community by integrating the Long
Branch and University of Maryland communities. We want to reach out to
them to let them know more about the University of Maryland and welcome
them into our family.
To do that, we are collecting Maryland
apparel and “swag” to bring to the event, as a gesture of welcome. We
will be collecting the gear over four days. Anything from T-shirts, key
chains, pens, cups, and hats is greatly appreciated. As a thank you, all
those who donate will be entered into a raffle for a Chipotle gift
card.
In addition, if you would like to participate in our booth
at the Unity Day Festival, you can reach us at
