Capital Teaching Residency Teacher TRaining Program - Info 9/22

Greetings, University of Maryland!

I hope this email finds you well. My name is Kaisha Baker. I am a University of Maryland Alumna and the Early Childhood Recruitment Manager  at KIPP DC. I’m reaching out to you because I’ll be on campus on Thursday, September 22nd to share information about KIPP DC’s Capital Teaching Residency (CTR) program.

Knowledge is Power Program (KIPP) is a network of high-performing charter schools. We have 180+ schools across the country and are constantly growing. KIPP DC is the second largest KIPP network with 16 schools and 1 learning facility located in our nation’s capital. We’re also the first KIPP network to build our own teacher residency pipeline program (Capital Teaching Residency) in 2007. We believe in the power of great educators and are truly invested in building the next generation of excellent teachers.

CTR is a nationally recognized, highly selective teacher training program that provides a pathway for aspiring teachers to develop into outstanding educators prepared to serve in high-need schools in Washington, D.C. CTRs make a commitment to teach for a minimum of three years in Washington, D.C. Residents spend the first year of this commitment— their residency year—training in a classroom with a mentor teacher. Throughout this time, the program supports CTRs as they develop into skilled educators through intensive coaching, focused professional development coursework, and daily practice perfecting their skills in a real classroom. After successfully completing their residency and all associated requirements, CTR alumni remain in the classroom for at least two more years and continue to teach at E.L. Haynes, KIPP DC, or partner public charter schools across D.C. For all three years, CTRs receive a competitive, full-time salary and benefits – yes, including the residency year! We also have a partnership with American University to acquire a master’s degree at a stipend rate.

Steps in the CTR Application Process:
1.       Submit an online application
2.       If selected, participate in a 45-60 minute phone interview with a KIPP DC Recruitment Team member
3.       Finalists attend an in-person interview (at a KIPP DC or E.L. Haynes school) and meet our school leaders
4.       School leaders make offer decisions and CTR Team notifies finalists within two weeks of final interview day*

Check out our CTR video (https://vimeo.com/144631108) to learn more about our program. Our first deadline is rapidly approaching on October 3rd.  Please reach out if you have questions or would like me to connect with specific students.
