Assault in the Ivory Tower on the Market for Ideas - 9/27

Free speech is protected by the American constitution. Today, there is a sense that this right is under threat on college campuses.

Some studies suggest that students are less willing to engage with anyone with whom they do not agree. Other studies that suggest that colleges are fearful of litigation and uncritically apply state and federal laws such as Title IX in ways that limit free speech.

Are we truly witnessing shifting attitudes about what is acceptable when it comes to individual expression, protests, and even jokes? Does anyone have the right not to be offended?

Join us as we discuss the state of free speech in higher education with Greg Lukianoff, President and CEO of the Foundation for Individual Rights in Education (FIRE).

We are asking undergraduate students to give us their thoughts on the state of free speech on the UMD campus. All respondents will be eligible to win cash prizes. The survey is located here.

You are welcome to come to a reception at the Ed Snider Center immediately following the event, but please RSVP by Sept. 20th by emailing Joyce at jkoo@rhsmith.umd.edu
