Science and Islam: Religious Orthodoxy and the Battle for Rationality is
the third event in the groundbreaking series exploring the
intersections and divergences of faith and reason. The event will take
place on Wednesday, April 24th at 6:00 p.m. at the George Washington University, Elliot School of International Affairs.
The Keynote Speaker for Science and Islam: Religious Orthodoxy and the Battle for Rationality,
Dr. Pervez Amirali Hoodbhoy, is a MIT educated professor of nuclear and
high energy physics and teaches at Quaid-e-Azam University and has been
awared the Baker Award for Electronics and the Abdus Salam Prize for
Mathematics, and is considered one of the 100 most influential global
thinkers in 2011. The Moderator for Science and Islam is George
Washington’s own Dr. Muhammad H. Faghfoory. A professor of Islamic
Studies, he teaches a variety of subjects including Islam, Sufism, and
Islamic Philosophy and Theology. He received his masters degree in
history and Middle East studies from the University of Illinois, and a
PhD in political science and Middle East studies from the University of
Wisconsin-Madison. Dr. Faghfoory has written, translated, and edited
nine books, numerous book chapters, articles, and book reviews. He is a
widely published academic who has lectured extensively about interfaith
dialogue. The Panelists for Science and Islam include Dr. Asad Q.
Ahmed, an Associate Professor of Arabic and Islamic Studies at the
University of California, Berkeley who has published numerous articles
in the fields of Islamic rationalism, philosophy, logic, and theology,
as well as Dr. Omar Sultan Haque, an instructor and postdoctoral fellow
at Harvard University, who is also a co-director of the UNESCO Chair in
Bioethics. Numerous media outlets including the Atlantic Monthly, BBC,
Forbes, Los Angeles Times, NPR, and the Washington Post have covered Dr.
Haque’s research.
