The
Entomology Department at the College Park campus is seeking research
technicians to assist in conducting both field and laboratory studies on the
biology and management of insect populations in various agricultural crops from
mid-August to the end of December. Field work involves planting and maintaining
experimental plots, harvesting crops, trapping insects, and collecting data to
evaluate different management treatments. Laboratory work includes insect
colony maintenance, processing field samples, data entry, microbiology, and
some molecular biology.
All
studies will be conducted on-campus as well as several UMD Research Farm
Facilities. Training and transportation will be provided, and technicians will
work together as a team. Candidates should demonstrate an enthusiasm for
working both outdoors, sometimes under harsh environmental conditions, and in a
sterile laboratory environment; an attention to detail and careful data
collection skills are important. Candidates should be available for a minimum
of 10 hours per week. Wage commensurate with experience. If you would like to
also pursue an independent project with this position, you can receive course
credit in addition to being paid.
Required:
18 years or older; MD driver’s license; background in biology and experience in
entomology or agriculture or molecular biology is preferred but not necessary.
Interested applicants should submit your resume, cover letter, unofficial
transcripts, and any questions to Maggie Lewis at mtlewis@umd.edu. Review
of applications will begin on September 15th and continue until the
position is filled.
