Applicants should be MA students or rising seniors.
The Folger Institute Scholarly Programs seeks an intelligent and industrious intern who is able to work on Thursdays or Fridays during the 2015-2016 academic year.
We have found that the best candidates are M.A. students and rising seniors who have demonstrated an interest in and facility with the history, literature, and culture of sixteenth- and seventeenth-century Europe and/or England.
We need independent workers who pay attention to detail and who are able to work well in a supporting role. Institute interns co-ordinate rare
book displays, assist with computer equipment set-ups, prepare seminar mailings and postings, check bibliographic citations, and run general "gofer" errands at the Folger Shakespeare Library and (occasionally) the Library of Congress. Interns may assist our Program Assistant with preparing materials for various meetings (like those of the Consortium
Executive Committee, the scholarly programs application review committee, and the Fellowships selection committee). Interns may also assist with updating Folgerpedia articles as time and interest allows.
Good communication and interpersonal skills are required. Familiarity with Microsoft Office in a PC environment is a plus.
Direct benefits of the position include the opportunity to audit our advanced seminars as needed and the chance to become familiar with holdings at the Folger and the Library of Congress. Undergraduates
considering graduate school are able to take part in the Folger community by joining midday talks and meeting readers, seminar directors, and program participants as duties allow. A modest stipend will be offered. If the selected candidate's university offers credit for internships, I am certainly willing to serve as the intern's formal supervisor and
complete the necessary paperwork.
Interested students should send a cover letter and resume directly to me in the next few weeks. We will begin reviewing materials and scheduling interviews on Monday, 17 August, until the position is filled.
I would be happy to answer any questions that you may have.
Sincerely,
Owen Williams, PhD
Assistant Director
