Are you passionate about
girls’ empowerment? Are you interested in mentoring or being a positive
role model? Have you thought about pursuing a career in education or
women’s issues and want to gain hands-on experience?
Power
Up is a girls’ empowerment club for 4th, 5th, and 6th grade girls from
local elementary schools. The goals of Power Up are to improve
self-esteem, promote the importance of education, and teach leadership
skills through fun and interactive activities by University of Maryland
students and mentors. The two cohorts of Power Up will be working
together to create a community of mentorship. The club, proven to be
very successful over the last two years, is entering its third year!
For
the Fall 2015 semester, joining Power Up is a one-day a week
commitment. Based on schedule preferences, if you are invited to be a
mentor, you will be assigned to a specific school and schedule. Sessions
will take place Monday and Wednesday afternoons from 1:45pm to 4:15pm.
Transportation will be provided to and from the schools and this time
block includes transportation time. In addition to your Monday or
Wednesday afternoon session, facilitators will also attend once a week
meetings to reflect, touch base, and plan for the following week.
Those
chosen as mentors will be required to participate in the entirety of
the program, which begins this upcoming fall semester (exact date TBD).
Weekly group meetings are also mandatory. All facilitators are required
to complete a background check through the Prince George’s Country
Public School Administration. This background check must be completed
before the start of the sessions. We will arrange exact details about
this later on.
Due to the nature of the group, we are only taking applications from women.
