“Citizen diplomacy” is the simple idea that anyone can contribute to international relations and global prosperity by engaging positively with people from other cultures and nations.  This concept is at the core of well-known U.S. government initiatives, such as the Peace Corps and the Fulbright program. But what is the role of citizen diplomacy and international exchange in today’s complicated world, and how can each of us get involved?

In this free public seminar, Sherry L. Mueller, Ph.D. will provide an overview of today’s citizen diplomacy landscape, drawing on her decades of experience. Dr. Mueller is President Emeritus of Global Ties U.S. (formerly NCIV); worked for 18 years at the Institute of International Education; and was a Liaison Officer for the U.S. Department of State. In 2011, One To World presented Dr. Mueller with the Fulbright Award for Citizen Diplomacy. She received the U.S. Information Agency's Award for Outstanding Service in 1996. Selected publications include “Professional Exchanges, Citizen Diplomacy, and Credibility” in America’s Dialogue with the World, published by the Public Diplomacy Council.  In 2008, Georgetown University Press released the book Working World: Careers in International Education, Exchange, and Development, written with Mark Overmann.
