University
Honors is expanding opportunities for students to participate in the HONR100 Section Leader Program.
First
we’ve extended the deadline to Wednesday, December 3, 2014. So, you’ll
have the chance to work on your application over the Thanksgiving
break.
Second,
we are offering a training course for fall 2015. So, if you are
studying abroad or have a class conflict this spring, you can still
apply and, if accepted, we’ll hold your spot until the fall semester.
Although we still prefer to have you enroll in the spring
training course, we can be flexible provided that you have an serious
commitment elsewhere.
Third,
if you would like to team teach you and your friend can apply together.
Both applicants must be in the Honors College and have a 3.0 minimum
GPA. At least one member of the team must be in University Honors.
Please apply separately.
Email
if you have questions LLebrun@umd.edu. The Section Leader position details are listed below in the original ad.
University
Honors is looking for talented students to teach HONR100 for fall
2015. HONR100 is a 1-credit course for new Honors students and assists
them in transitioning to the university.
Section
Leaders are responsible for teaching and mentoring approximately 15 new
Honors students through their first semester. The Section Leader
creates lesson plans within the parameters of course goals and
facilitates weekly discussions. The Section Leader also
grades assignments and maintains class records.
Students
selected for the Section Leader program receive 3 credits for teaching
HONR100. Section Leaders earn 1-credit for successfully completing a
training course in Spring 2015. There are 2 sections for the course.
The first section will be Wednesdays from 4:00-6:00
p.m. and the second section will be Thursdays from 4:00-6:00 p.m.
The
remaining 2 credits are earned in fall 2015 by teaching HONR100.
Students must successfully complete the spring training course before
teaching HONR100. Section Leaders teach HONR100 either individually or
in pairs.
Because
Welcome Week is a part of HONR100 and counts toward course points,
Section Leaders are required to participate in the events with their
students. Welcome Week will be Aug. 26- Aug. 30, 2015.
Students
must have completed at least one year at the University and have a 3.0 GPA to be selected for the Section Leader Program.
Interested
students should complete this google form by Nov. 21, 2014 in order to
be considered for an interview. The form is short and should take only a
few minutes to complete. http://ter.ps/7ac
On
the google form, you will be asked to briefly describe your interest in being an HONR100 Section Leader.
There
will be a 2-round interview process. The first interview will be
informational. It’s a chance for us to get to know you better and learn
about your qualifications. Please bring a copy of your resume.
Applicants
who successfully complete the first round will be asked to deliver a
5-10 minute presentation on a topic relevant to first-year students.
Potential topics include: time management, goal setting, stress
management, academics, or whatever else you choose.
During
the first round of interviews, we will reserve time for you to get
feedback on your topic and advise on how best to engage your audience.
Only applicants selected for the second round of interviews will be
asked to present. So, there is no need to have the
presentation worked out in advance.
If
you have questions, you are welcome to contact Liza Lebrun at LLebrun@umd.edu
