As part of our Migrations theme programming (an offshoot of the campus’s Year of Immigration), College Park Scholars is offering an excursion next Saturday, October 20 to the Harriet Tubman Byway on the Eastern Shore. The goal is to give students the opportunity for hands-on exploration of the history of slavery in Maryland and Tubman’s key role in the Underground Railroad as a form of liberatory migration. The trip is an all-day commitment. The bus will leave from Cambridge Hall at 8:45 a.m. and return at 7 p.m. At the moment, we still have plenty of seats available, so I am writing to invite Honors students to join in the adventure. There will be a $10 charge for the trip, which will cover the tour, light breakfast, and lunch. It’s a good deal and a cool opportunity to build community across a range of programs.
Here is a link to the sign-up form, which has more details about the itinerary: https://docs. google.com/forms/d/e/ 1FAIpQLSfExIb3uDQu1MRyQIG5_ G2Q-lD6OG_jKCKUMhwMU47KlhckAQ/ viewform. Jess Krenek, administrative coordinator for Scholars, will serve as chaperone and guide on the excursion. Students can contact her with questions at jkrenek@umd.edu or at 314-2777.
