Volunteer with Justice for Juniors

Justice for Juniors works across campuses: George Washington University, Catholic University, and UMD! The volunteer opportunity trains students to help facilitate conversations with boys detailed and awaiting adjudication and/or disposition by the courts at the Youth Services Center in NE DC. At the facility, students have the opportunity to interact with these youths by discussing how to navigate ethical issues presented in news articles. From 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., students will work in small groups to review the article and open conversation about the subject material. Each session lasts about an hour. Afterwards, student volunteers meet for a debrief wrap up conversation with fellow volunteers.

Secondly, there is a mentoring and hope formation session at the first floor lobby, GW Marvin Center, 800 21st Street, N.W. DC ( two blocks from the GW/Foggy Bottom Metro (orange, blue and silver lines).  Juvenile shelter residents attend the sessions from 10:00 A.M. to noon.  They continue to resolve ethical dilemma questions to develop critical thinking and decision making skills; and they ask questions related to how the faith of the Black Tradition (Islam and Christianity) enables transformation.

Thirdly, on Sundays, 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at the UMD Hillel Building, 7612 Mowatt Lane, College Park, Md. Justice for Juniors Volunteers tutor and mentor juveniles on probation and those brought there by parents.

Finally, there is a Public Policy component to Justice for Juniors: the Annual UMD Juvenile Justice Forum.  The forum invites experts to address public policy questions pertaining to Juvenile Justice locally and nationally.  The Fall Forum is scheduled for November 3rd, 6:30 p.m. (at a place to be designated at UMD). This fall's forum is co-sponsored by the US Justice Department, the Sentencing Project, the Council of Churches, Greater Washington; the State of Maryland Department of Public Safety and Corrections; and UMD Hillel.

This is a great opportunity for students to get involved in the justice system and volunteer with youths.   So, if you are interested please contact Chaplain Johnson at jsiafa@gmail.com.  An orientation will be scheduled at UMD for all interested student volunteers.
