After-School Mentorship Program

Are you enthusiastic about math or science?  Do you want to make a difference in a young girl’s life?  If you answered yes, then you should be a GEMS Undergraduate Mentor!

We are now looking for mentors for our programs in three schools :
- William Wirt program (Every Tuesday, 4:00-5:55 pm)
- Nicholas Orem program (Every Wednesday, 4:15-6:00 pm)
- Buck Lodge program ( Every Thursday, 3:30-5:00 pm)

Our most urgent need is for mentors, but other volunteer opportunities are also available: curriculum development, field trip coordinator, funding, PR/Communications, IT, parent relations.

The weekly time commitment for each mentor would include the time in their chosen school as well as 30 mins- 1 hr for the weekly mentor meeting, which can be arranged at a mutually convenient time.

Our program has historically had 5 mentors in each school, each doing hands-on activities with a group of 3-5 girls.  We will start our program in the first week of October, meet when University of Maryland meets (except the week of Thanksgiving) and we stop before exam week.

Students interested in being a can apply at ter.ps/9t0. For best consideration, Apply by Tuesday, September 13th, 2016. Don’t hesitate to contact us even if the deadline has passed!

We know that many students would like to make a difference in the life or a young girl, but do not have the time needed to be a mentor for a semester. We have benefited in the past and we would welcome this semester as well presentations from University of Maryland students to our girls. The students can talk about their fields of studies, how they became interested in them, their internships, and future jobs.
