Beyond the Classroom Is Now Accepting Applications for Fall 2013! Join a Globally Engaged, Civic Community!

Do you want to make a difference in your community—
from the local to the global levels?
Are you looking for a real-world opportunity in the nonprofit sector that enables you to develop your professional and leadership skills before graduating?

Beyond the Classroom offers undergraduate students the opportunity to explore exciting civic opportunities in the non-profit sector in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area.  During the first semester, students will participate in an interdisciplinary seminar (UNIV 325) on civic engagement and social change in a global context that prepares students for public service on civic issues that matter most to them.  During the next semester, students will serve an internship with a nonprofit or nongovernmental organization working on important civic issues (e.g., civil liberties, democracy, environment, human rights, social issues) at either the local, national, or global levels, while participating in a seminar (UNIV 326) that supports their practical experience. For students seeking the program notation, the final seminar (UNIV 389) enables students, working collaboratively with their peers on joint projects, to deepen and to apply their knowledge by addressing key civic issues.
Take charge of your education and go “beyond the classroom”
to realize your potential for civic leadership!
