Code for Community Competition Update

I would like to invite all UMD undergraduates to participate in our competition, “Code for Community: Make a Difference: Create a mobile / web based app to meet a community need”.  As the name indicates, this  is a competition for teams of 2 to 4 undergraduates to develop apps to address the needs of communities.  Our community sponsors range from the Baltimore Planning Department to the Prince Georges Park and Recreation Department to our own Office of Community Engagement among others.  This IS NOT a competition for programmers only.  We are looking for teams that are a mix of non-programmers and programmers.  We will be providing workshops on App Development for non-programmers (as well as programmers), and other technical support.  There is also a website with consulting resources. This IS a competition to make a difference in the quality of our communities.  A framework of needs has been defined by our Community Sponsors, but ultimately you can define the community need. Our website provides examples.  Notably, in many instances the code is open source, and  your app can be a modification of an existing app, but customized to a local community need.  We think this is a great opportunity for you to build up resume, develop new skills, meet people actively engaged in app development, and learn about neighborhoods.

The registration deadline for the competition is January 21, 2013.  The deadline is to help us schedule the App Development workshops.  The Code for Community website:  www.arch.umd.edu/Planning/cfc  has additional information regarding the competition as well as the registration form.  Please take a look.   If you have questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact Prof. Chen at: achen@umd.edu
