"Can Beauty Save the World?" - March 28
Guest lecture by Dr. Raymond Hain from Providence College
Thursday the 28th at 8:00 PM in the Prince George's Room of Stamp Student Union
Pope Benedict XVI once said that “art and the saints are the greatest apologetics for our faith.” Does this mean that beauty can save the world? If we think of “beauty”, alongside “truth" and “goodness”, as one of the scholastic “transcendentals,” then our answer should be a qualified yes. But in the end, all three are needed to save the world: the mystic, the poet, and the saint. To reflect more deeply on the relationship between these three, and their importance in our lives, we’ll consider in depth some examples from Aristotle’s Nicomachean Ethics, Shakespeare’s Coriolanus, and Tolkien’s “Leaf by Niggle.”

The Gender, Culture, and Health Lab is seeking conscientious, detail-oriented undergraduate research assistants
The Gender, Culture, and Health Lab is seeking conscientious, detail-oriented undergraduate research assistants who can dedicate at least 3 hours per week to help with studies related to gender and health outcomes across diverse populations, starting in the Summer or Fall 2019 semester. RAs will be responsible for collecting and managing data, recruiting and running participants, and assisting with other laboratory tasks. Projects will focus on how gender norms (e.g., masculinity and femininity) affect mental health outcomes, especially related to alcohol and substance abuse, disordered eating, and sexual assault and violence. Research findings will be used to better understand the intersections of gender and health and to create interventions to improve health outcomes. In future semesters, RAs would also have the opportunity to conduct independent research related to gender and health or other topics in counseling/clinical psychology. Depending on skill-level and interest, RAs may have the opportunity to present posters or participate in papers for publication. A psychology major is not required. Students of diverse and underrepresented backgrounds and identities are actively encouraged to apply. Students who are rising sophomores are also especially encouraged to apply. Students selected to work as RAs can potentially earn research credit. Support Gemstone Team METR (Musicians’ Experiential Trauma Research)
Team METR (Musicians’ Experiential Trauma Research) has been conducting research over the past year that investigates occupational health disorders in musicians called playing-related musculoskeletal disorders (PRMDs). These painful disorders are estimated to affect up to 78.5% of guitar players and can cause disabling pain as well as loss of income for musicians. Our research will utilize innovative technology, developed by the University of Maryland and Peabody Institute of the Johns Hopkins University, to assess the biomechanical variables associated with PRMDs. Our research will be used to uncover practical methods of prevention and treatment of PRMDs to ensure that musicians around the world have pain-free experiences while playing their instruments! But before we can do this, we need your help to fund our project! Our study requires musicians to participate and demands lab equipment to measure and analyze playing behavior. We are hoping that your donations will provide us with the funding we need to complete our project! Thank you so much for your time and for your support of Team METR and musicians everywhere!
