Graphic Design Intern, Community Engagement Interns Program
Office of Community Engagement (OCE) at the University of Maryland
Description: A Graphic Design Intern is needed to enhance the Office of Community Engagement’s on and off-campus identity and better promote campus efforts to provide resources that enhance quality of life in the surrounding Prince George’s County community. The internship is not paid. However, interns will gain valuable work experience and are encouraged to coordinate receiving academic credit. The Graphic Design Intern will work 10 hours per week throughout the semester. Hours are flexible.
Responsibilities: The intern will help develop graphics, layouts, fliers, logos, brochures and content for the Office’s programs, initiatives, and website (www.oce.umd.edu). The intern will also assist the Office of Community Engagement with general outreach at campus events and perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications: The Graphic Design Intern must have an excellent eye for art and able to coalesce complex topics into succinct graphic layouts. Photography skills preferred to help the Office document campus events and projects. Familiarity with InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop and Dreamweaver is a bonus. Art and Graphic Design students are strongly encouraged to apply though students in all majors with the requisite skills will be considered.
Prerequisites: Interns must be a current University of Maryland graduate or undergraduate student. Interns are expected to have a professional work ethic, manage their time well, and must be disciplined and self-motivated.
Internship Credit: Although students are not required to obtain academic credit, OCE encourages students to consult with an academic advisor to see whether internship credit is available through their academic department. If credit is not available through the student’s home department, internship credit may be available through other departments. Students must satisfy the specific internship requirements of the supporting academic department to earn credit, which typically involves 120 hours of work, a significant writing assignment, and an activities log and letter of evaluation from the on-site supervisor. Students are responsible for covering the tuition-related implications of accepting the internship. The Office of Community Engagement cannot pay for course credits.
About Us: The Office of Community Engagement strives to develop and maintain open communication as well as strong relationships with individuals, governments, and the business communities of College Park, MD and Prince George’s County. At the end of the day, our highest value is found in positive neighborhood engagement that promotes an atmosphere of goodwill between the University and its neighbors.
To Apply: Please send a cover letter, resume and selections from your digital media portfolio to oce@umd.edu. The one-page cover letter should address the following questions: Why do you want to be a community engagement intern? What are your qualifications for the Graphic Design Intern position? What are your post-graduation plans?
