Office of Community Engagement (OCE) at the University of Maryland
Description: A Latino Community Liaison Intern is needed to participate in events and provide the Office of Community Engagement staff with administrative and executive support in the implementation of projects that harness UMD resources to enhance quality of life in Prince George’s County, MD. The internship is not paid. However, interns will gain valuable work experience and are encouraged to coordinate receiving academic credit. The Latino Community Liaison Intern will work 10 hours per week throughout the semester. Hours are flexible.
Responsibilities: The intern will work with a wide variety of stakeholders in local government, business, non-profit organizations, and the campus community to assist in planning, implementing and evaluating community engagement projects for the Spanish-speaking community. Project areas include, but are not limited to, collaboration between the University of Maryland and the City of College Park, UMD’s Partnership with Paint Branch Elementary School, and projects involving UMD’s Center for Educational Partnership in Riverdale, MD. Assignments to project areas will be kept in the intern’s skills and interests. The intern will also help the Office of Community Engagement with general outreach at campus events and perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications: The Latino Community Liaison Intern must be fluent in Spanish and English and be able to successfully collaborate with Office staff and community members to plan partnership activities. Successful applicants will exhibit excellent organization and communications skills, attention to detail, and an enthusiasm for building positive relationships between the University of Maryland and our surrounding community. Familiarity with and connections to UMD student groups and Student Government Association (SGA) is a bonus; access to own transportation is preferred.
Students in all majors with the requisite skills and who are in good academic standing will be considered.
Prerequisites: Interns must be a current University of Maryland graduate or undergraduate student. Interns are expected to have a professional work ethic, manage their time well, and must be disciplined and self-motivated.
Internship Credit: Although students are not required to obtain academic credit, OCE encourages students to consult with an academic advisor to see whether internship credit is available through their academic department. If credit is not available through the student’s home department, internship credit may be available through other departments. Students must satisfy the specific internship requirements of the supporting academic department to earn credit, which typically involves 120 hours of work, a significant writing assignment, and an activities log and letter of evaluation from the on-site supervisor. Students are responsible for covering the tuition-related implications of accepting the internship. The Office of Community Engagement cannot pay for course credits.
