Established by Roger and Karen Winston (classes of ‘76 and ’75), the annual Winston Family Honors Writing Awards recognize the best short essay, research paper, and thesis written by University of Maryland Honors students.
Short Essay
Essay written for an Honors (HONR) Seminar.
Prize: $250. Length: 5-10 pages.
Research Paper
Paper written for an Honors (HONR) Seminar, H-version, or H-option course.
Prize: $500. Length: 10-30 pages.
Honors Thesis
Culminating research project undertaken in a departmental Honors program.
Prize: $1,000. Excerpt length: 20-40 pages.
Eligibility
- Submissions for the Short Essay and Research Paper Awards must have been submitted for course credit during one of the following terms: Spring 2017, Fall 2017, Winter 2018, and Spring 2018.
- Submissions for Thesis Awards must represent work from the culminating research requirement in a departmental honors program during Spring 2018.
- Only students currently enrolled in an undergraduate program at the time of submission are eligible for these awards.
- Submissions must be in an academic writing format.
- One submission per student.
Submissions
Submissions will be accepted beginning February 1, 2018 and through March 8, 2018 as follows:
- Short Essay Award and Research Paper Award submissions: complete the Student Application Form (here) and attach paper to this form.
- Thesis Award submissions: complete the Student Application Form (here) and attach in one file a 1-2pp. thesis abstract and a 20-40pp. thesis excerpt (preferably one or more chapters).
- All submissions should be revised, polished, and suitable for consideration by an awards committee comprised of readers from a variety of disciplinary backgrounds.
- For all submissions: the student’s faculty mentor must send a completed Faculty Statement Form (posted on our website) to WinstonAwards@umd.edu by Ma

Awards Luncheon
Winston Award recipients and their faculty mentors will be honored at a luncheon on April 27, 2018. Awardees will receive a monetary prize and a certificate. Awardees and mentors will also be celebrated on the Honors College and University Honors websites and social media accounts.
