Global Service in the Dominican Republic - Study Abroad - January 2018

Global Communities is excited to announce that applications are now being accepted for our Winter 2018 short-term study abroad program, Global Service in the Dominican Republic.  This course is designed to give you real-life, hands-on experience as international community service providers, by applying scholarship to practice.

This 3-credit study abroad course counts towards General Education: Diversity/Cultural Competence and as an elective for the Global Poverty Minor.  Students can choose to earn credit as course number BSGC338D (Global Communities) or LASC369R (Latin American Studies Certificate). The course is open to undergraduate students in all programs and majors. Spanish language skills are helpful, but not required. The course is taught by Jazmin Pichardo (Global Communities) and Jeremy Gombin-Sperling (Office of Diversity and Inclusion; International Education Policy).

We highly encourage you to begin your application soon. This way you will get a sense of what the requirements and potential costs of the program will be.  The fee is currently set at $2,395. This fee includes the three course credits, housing, all meals, excursions, lectures, other activities during the program, in-country transportation, and international health insurance. Scholarships are available, and it may be possible to use your financial aid towards costs.  If you start an application, you will get access to the scholarship form. The scholarship deadline is September 24th. The program deadline is Oct. 1st.

If you have any questions about the program structure and content, please reach out to us at drwinter18@umd.edu.  For any questions about the application itself, please contact eashortterm@umd.edu.
