Join the Asian American Literature club!

We are starting an Asian American Literature club at UMD in the fall of 2015. Meetings will be once every other week Thursday evenings at 8 PM (tentatively). Between club meetings, we will read one work of Asian American literature that we've voted on as a group. I hope we can cover a lot of ground -- AA sci fi, AA immigration literature, not just East but also South [and much more] Asian American literature, mixed race literature, writings by women, manga, poetry, etc. During the meetings, we will discuss the literary qualities and social implications of such works, and talk about how to incorporate diversity into our own writings. We will also vote on a "novel of the semester" that (hopefully) everyone will finish by December. You definitely do not have to be either of Asian heritage or a creative writer to join -- the idea is that someday diverse literature will be read by everyone.

This club is a combination of social advocacy, cultural awareness, critical reading, and creative writing. We will attend MICA, APAHM, and diverse literary events as a group, and have coffee and dinner together. Depending on the interests of our members and funding, we may have workshops or editing pairs later on -- and put together a small chapbook.  Our faculty advisor, Lawrence Minh-Bui Davis, has a great deal of experience in this field and will help us along the way.
