A surprising feature of this season’s presidential election in the U.S. is the attention that immigration politics is attracting, particularly issues related to the intersection of immigration and crime (crimmigration). It is particularly surprising because undocumented immigration and crime are on the wane, not to mention that immigrants are less inclined than citizens to commit crime.

The conference is hosted by MLAW Programs, and sponsored by BSOS, Center for Global Migration Studies, Francis King Carey School of Law, Office International Affairs, College Park Scholars, Global Communities, and the American Immigration Council.
It will feature scholars and activists from around the globe all devoted to creating public dialogue around the human rights dimension of crimmigration, through research and social activism.
Specifically, conferees will discuss the criminalization of immigration in the US and internationally, at sovereign borders (US-Mexico; issues with the Schengen zone in Europe) and through internal controls: enforcement, detention and removal strategies. The conference will feature 2 keynote addresses, featuring Professor Tony Platt (UC-Berkeley) on Thursday at 9:15, and Professor Leonidas Cheliotas (London School Economics), Friday at 9:15. Also featured are two plenary panels: 1)Thursday at 3:30 w/ topic: Race and Crimmigration and 2) Friday at 2:45 on Immigration and Social Activism. Also highly recommended are the 16 panels being held throughout the 2 day conference.
