Final Call - Boren Scholarships for Critical Language Study

The Boren Scholarship is aimed at undergraduates (US citizens) who want to study abroad for one or two semesters (preferably) in 2016-17 in non-traditional regions and countries, and who are interested in learning the languages of those areas. Boren Scholarships for 2016-17 may be used for study abroad in Summer 2016, Fall 2016 and/or Spring 2017. Maryland has ranked # 1 in the nation in Boren Scholarships awarded for the past 4 years!!!

The Boren Scholarship supports study of ANY of the languages of Africa, South Asia, East and Southeast Asia, Eastern Europe and former Soviet Republics, Latin America, and the Middle East. In addition, the Boren program has special initiatives for African and South Asian languages:

AFRICAN LANGUAGES INITIATIVE: The Boren Scholarship offers applicants special opportunities to begin or deepen their knowledge of, and proficiency in, African languages and cultures. Through the initiative Boren Scholars can study one of the following languages at a U.S.-based summer 2015 program prior to commencing their overseas Boren Scholarship funded program: French, Akan/Twi, Swahili, Wolof, Yoruba, and Zulu. In addition, African Languages Initiative overseas programs are available for intensive language and cultural study during fall semester 2015 in the following countries: Tanzania (Swahili), Mozambique (Portuguese), and Senegal (French).

SOUTH ASIAN LANGUAGES INITIATIVE: The Boren Scholarship offers applicants special opportunities to begin or deepen their knowledge of, and proficiency in, Hindi and Urdu and cultural immersion by participating in domestic and overseas language programs. The SAFLI program is appropriate for applicants with no language proficiency as well as those with intermediate and advanced proficiency in Hindi and/or Urdu.
*The Boren Scholarship is a U.S. Government-funded award that seeks applicants who have a strong interest in future Government service; the award carries a one-year service expectation.*

DEADLINE: All Maryland applicants for the Boren Scholarship must take part in a required campus review process which is designed to help you strengthen your application. The deadline for Maryland¹s review process is JANUARY 25, 2016.
