Summer study abroad options for Honors students - apply by March 1, 2013!

  • China - Exploring Confucius China -http://ter.ps/sumchinaconf - Students will study Chinese culture in areas such as history, arts, Taichi, opera, cuisine, calligraphy and music, take excursions to Confucian sites,  and visits to important cultural sites, such as Beijing, Qufu, and the sacred mountain of Tai Shan! In addition, students are eligible for nomination to the Tsinghua summer camp where they can volunteer and earn a stipend for 4 weeks in Beijing prior to the start of the UMD course!
    **10 admitted students will receive $500 scholarships thanks to generous support from the Confucius Institute**
  • Ireland - James Joyce's Dublin - http://ter.ps/sumirelandjj
    Use James Joyces novel Ulysses as a springboard to explore the city of Dublin, its culture, history, politics and society. Live each historical reference while walking through the eighteen chapters of the book. In each chapter youll follow in the footsteps of the main characters as they travel through different sections of Dublin.
  • Croatia - At the Doorsteps of the European Union - Leaving Behind the Memories of War & Communism - http://ter.ps/sumcroatia
    This program starts in Dubrovnik investigating George Bernard Shaws quote, "those who seek paradise on earth should come to Dubrovnik." Travel along the Dalmatian coast to reach the island Vis, where we will join a group of students from the University of Zagreb. We will will spend several days exploring the city of Split and its continues urban development since it was founded by the last emperor of Rome in the 4th century. Finally, we will come to the capital city of Zagreb, getting acquainted with the countrys socioeconomic development and geopolitical progress and readiness to enter the EU in July 2013. We will visit several historical and environmental attractions, investigate human and settlement development, attend lectures, and learn about Croatias geomorphology by visiting the natural wonders of the Karst region. 
  • Italy - Landscape Architecture, Architecture & Musichttp://ter.ps/sumitalylarc
    Investigate Italy through the study of historical town planning, public piazzas, landscape architecture, music, and architecture, in this three-week, three-credit course sponsored by the Department of Plant Science and Landscape Architecture. You will communicate their observations, reactions, and knowledge of the sites visited throughout Italy. Each student will keep a sketch book/journal (provided) and be requested to discuss their observations in a daily class meeting. There will be language classes for an hour each day.
