Space still available on Winter 2017 Cuba SPAN Study Abroad Program - Deadline EXtended to Nov. 4

Critical Cultures in Contemporary Cuba. An Introduction to the Cuban
Revolution

This program will introduce students to the study of the aesthetic and discursive
manifestations of contemporary Cuba and to what extent the Cuban Revolution (1959) is
still an institutional and political reality in the Island. Can a critical discourse still perform
and intervene in contemporary Cuba? The program will begin by providing
students with a general background on the history of the country, literature and the arts,
and a theoretical toolbox to empower their critical discourse. In Cuba, field visits in Havana,
Pinar del Río, Matanzas, etc. will expose students to both nature and culture. The students
will have the opportunity to visit institutions of culture and meet with writers, artists and
filmmakers. The program will also include evening cultural activities and recreational visits to
area beach resorts where we can explore the impact of tourism on contemporary Cuban
culture.
