Free Writing Productivity Workshop Opportunity for Honors College Students (March 16th, 2013)

I am writing to you regarding an exciting opportunity that we wish to extend to undergraduate students in the Honors College.  In collaboration with Drs. Carl W. Lejuez (University of Maryland at College Park) and Mo Wang (University of Florida), we recently received funds from the American Psychological Association to develop an innovative webinar workshop to improve students’ productivity in academic writing.  We wish to hold a day-long workshop on writing productivity in front of a live audience, so that we can then archive this workshop for future use and distribute through social media and other online formats.

 We would like to provide this opportunity at no cost.  The workshop will be held Saturday, March 16^th, 2013, in the Biology-Psychology building at the University of Maryland at College Park (UMCP). 

We wish for students to RSVP on their attendance, and once they do so, I will forward travel information and specifics as to the start and end times of the workshop.

Tim Carey, PepsiCo’s Director of Sustainability & Technology presents “The Business Case for Sustainability” Monday, 3/4/13: 5-6:30pm @ Hoff Theater at the Stamp Student Union.

Mr. Carey will provide some insights as to why sustainability is quickly becoming a top priority for Fortune 500 companies and for local mom-and-pop shops alike - specifically, why a “healthier future for all people and our planet means a more successful future for PepsiCo.” As Mr. Carey welcomes interaction with the audience, a Q&A session will follow his presentation.

Net Impact hosts Northwestern Mutual Foundation's President, John Kordsmeier

Join Net Impact as we host Northwestern Mutual Foundation's President, John Kordsmeier. He will be speaking about the charitable arm of Northwestern Mutual (Northwestern Mutual Foundation), Corporate Social Responsibility, and how to do good with your career. There will be RECRUITERS from Northwestern Mutual's Baltimore office, there will be FOOD and there will be NETWORKING!

In addition, Northwestern Mutual representatives will be hosting a reception right after the main speaker, around 7 pm. This is a great opportunity to network one-on-one with job recruiters. If you can't make it at 6pm, definitely try to come by around 7pm because this will be a fantastic event!

Health Leads - volunteer in a healthcare setting

Looking for a public health experience that will give you the opportunity to volunteer in a healthcare setting? Health Leads, UMD is a national non-profit organization that helps connect low-income families to basic resources like food, housing, job training and childcare. We work directly out of different clinics and hospitals.

We are now accepting early priority applications for Summer and Fall 2013 until Friday, March 8th, 2013. Interviews will be held the week of Monday, March 11th. AMSA GBM: NIH Speaker on Genetics of Pediatric Obesity

Dr. Yanovski, head of the Section on Growth and Obesity at NICHD-NIH, will come present the work being done on genetics of pediatric obesity. Come to learn more about obesity and clinical research. The meeting will be held in the Benjamin Banneker Room at Stamp on Tuesday, March 5th at 7 pm.

PreOptometry Society

Our next meeting is Tuesday, March 5th at 6:00pm in the Edgar Allen Poe room in Stamp.  Joy will be presenting on "Save Your Vision" Month!  We will also have a quick discussion about the OAT and practical study tips.  Finally, we will host a representative from ICO (Illinois College of Optometry).  Melissa will be our last rep this year, and if you missed SUNY, you can really learn a wealth of information about optometry school admissions in general from reps, and then they usually just talk up their respective school a bit at the end.  Please direct questions to preoptometry.umcp@gmail.com.
