Research Assistant for Evaluation of Program for Low-income Infants/Toddlers & Families

Overview: The Center for Early Childhood Education and Intervention at the University of
Maryland College Park (UMD), is seeking part-time or full-time research assistants (RAs) to work on a project to evaluate an early care, education, and intervention program for low-income infants and toddlers, and their families. The RAs would be part of a busy and thriving research-to-practice group at the University of Maryland. This position is ideal for a young professional wanting to work with children and families and/or seeking to attend graduate school at a later point, or someone who is a current graduate student.

Responsibilities: The RA duties for this position are primarily related to data collection for the evaluation of a program serving low-income infants, toddlers, and their families. Specifically, RAs will conduct home visits to collect data on family characteristics and experiences, and to administer assessments to infants and toddlers. Other data collection activities may include recruiting families for the project at child care centers, as well as interviewing child care center staff. Although the project is housed at University of Maryland College Park, data collection occurs in low-income communities of Washington, DC. Given that the data collection occurs in families’ homes, ideally candidates will have access to a car.

Qualifications:
● Major in psychology, education, child development, family science, or a related discipline.
● Some experience working with children and families.
● Experience working in low-income communities is preferred.
● Infant/toddler assessment experience is a plus, but not required.
● Background using SPSS or other data entry programs is a plus, but not required.
● Excellent interpersonal, collaborative, and organizational skills are required.
● Minimum 20 hours per week is preferred.

How to Apply: Please send the following in one pdf file to Cassie Simons (csimons1@umd.edu)
● Resume or Curriculum Vita (CV).
● Half page (double-spaced) letter of interest describing the applicant’s related experiences,
interest in the position, and future career aspirations.
● Names and contact information for 1-2 references (references can come from work or
volunteer experience or academic advisors or instructors).
● An unofficial transcript for any undergraduate or graduate work completed.
● For best consideration, please submit your application by August 15, 2019.

Lead for America

Lead for America is a nonprofit working to ensure that our country’s most dynamic and diverse young leaders are working on our toughest challenges. We believe that with the right leadership in the right places, we can reimagine the American Dream in a way that is 1) Shared. Where we all have strong communal ties and a common aspiration of equity and justice for all. 2) Accessible. Where everyone has a chance at economic and civic mobility, no matter their zip code; and 3) Sustainable. Where our education system and public institutions are well positioned to grow and sustain the next generation of leadership that will be responsible for solving problems that we cannot yet see.

The Lead for America Fellowship: For outstanding leaders ages 21-30 to serve their hometown communities in roles in local government, local non-profits, or civically oriented local business. Fellows are tasked with addressing a crucial community project—from affordable housing, to opioid relief, to environmental resilience—that the local government or others don’t have the bandwidth to address. Fellows are also tasked with building a bench of civic leadership around them, with each recruiting additional leaders to return to their community during their Fellowship. Apply here.

Lead for America Staff Application: In the next year, we expect to grow from 6 full-time employees to 20, which will put us in position to significantly expand our Fellowship and education programs, while also positioning us as a leading model for community-based problem solving prior to the 2020 elections. We are looking for team members who are excited about being a part of this growth and helping shape a nationwide movement that will be enlisting hundreds, and soon thousands, of young leaders every year. Apply here.

The Lead for America Fall Internship Program: Fall Interns will help to grow the identity and reach of LFA by promoting new forms of community engagement on college campuses and expanding the LFA network. Fall Interns can choose to be a Campus Outreach Director (manager of all recruitment initiatives on their university campus), a GovChallenge Director (leader and organizer of a local government case competition on their campus), or an Executive Intern (executive assistant to the LFA C-Suite). All three tracks require at least 10-15 hours of time per week. Apply here.

Sign Up for IDEA258C: Designing Ethical Campaigns (1 Credit) - Fall 2019

This student taught course will introduce students and immerse them in the methods of running an ethical campaign. Through our campus, local, state, and national government, we have seen how dirty politics can get. Throughout the semester students will be able to apply their learnings to design a campaign that can make tangible differences, but stay true to their core values. We will explore the different functions and methods it takes to run an ethical campaign. Our assignments and activities will allow for students to have hands on engagement with stakeholders at UMD to create and test their own ethical campaign.  Questions? Contact Andrew String (apstring@umd.edu) or Alexis Amos (aamos1@umd.edu).
