Terps Against Hunger- Volunteer opportunity for all - Oct 7

Join Terps Against Hunger (TAH) on either Sunday, October 7th or Monday, October 8th for our 5th annual Homecoming Community Service Event! This will be a two-day event, during which we'll pack 400,000 meals for local children and families suffering from food insecurity. All meals we pack will be distributed through our network of over 15 local partners who make sure that our meal make it to the communities that need them most. We work with the Capital Area Food Bank, Maryland Food Bank, DC Central Kitchen, Manna Food Center, and many more. TAH is a student-run organization at UMD. Since it began packing meals on campus in December 2013, TAH has engaged over 15,000 volunteers to pack over 2,300,000 meals. For the upcoming 2018/2019 academic year, the organization expects to pack over 1 million meals for local families.

Volunteers will work together at units of 15-20 people, packing non-perishable meals in an assembly-line fashion. The meal packing process includes: (1) combining ingredients (rice, soy, dehydrated vegetables, and a vitamin/mineral powder) through funnels into our UMD-branded TAH bags; (2) weighing the bags on scales to ensure they are the proper weight; (3) sealing the bags using self-time heat-sealers; and (4) packing bags into our TAH boxes. We always make sure to have chairs in the room for anyone who would like to sit down during part of their volunteer time, or for younger kids to stand on and make participation easier.

The event will be held in the Adele H. STAMP Grand Ballroom, and is open to all members of our community including UMD students, staff, faculty, alumni, parents/family members, and local community members. We've had volunteers as young as 4 and as old as 90 years old. Please help us spread the word and invite your friends to join you in fighting local hunger!
