Help Crowdfund Video to Teach Kids about Soil Formation

I graduated from the University of Maryland Honors Program in 2013.

I wrote and recorded a song about soils, to teach kids about soil formation. Since then I've worked with three other UMD graduates with the purpose of raising funds to create an animated video that illustrates the lyrics.

Today we launched the crowdfunding campaign where people can donate.

We're really excited about this project, especially due to the fact that the UN declared 2015 International Year of Soils. Please check out our crowdfunding campaign, and spread the word in any way you can!  We need the UMD HONR community's support to make this happen.

Did you know that UMCP offers majors, minors, and scholarships for students of Classics?

In addition to courses in English that fulfill Gen Ed requirements, we offer a full sequence of language courses in Latin and Greek; minors in Classical Mythology, Archaeology, Latin, and Greek (ancient or modern); and major tracks in Latin, Latin and Greek, or Classical Humanities.  We have generous scholarships (with preference given to majors and minors) for study abroad in Italy and Greece, but even if you're not a major, you may qualify for one of our Latin scholarships if you continue your study of the language at the 200 level or above!  See the attached flyers and contact the department chair, Prof. Lillian Doherty (LDoherty@umd.edu), for more information.

Join the Asian American Literature club!

We are starting an Asian American Literature club at UMD in the fall of 2015. Meetings will be once every other week Thursday evenings at 8 PM (tentatively). Between club meetings, we will read one work of Asian American literature that we've voted on as a group. I hope we can cover a lot of ground -- AA sci fi, AA immigration literature, not just East but also South [and much more] Asian American literature, mixed race literature, writings by women, manga, poetry, etc. During the meetings, we will discuss the literary qualities and social implications of such works, and talk about how to incorporate diversity into our own writings. We will also vote on a "novel of the semester" that (hopefully) everyone will finish by December. You definitely do not have to be either of Asian heritage or a creative writer to join -- the idea is that someday diverse literature will be read by everyone.

This club is a combination of social advocacy, cultural awareness, critical reading, and creative writing. We will attend MICA, APAHM, and diverse literary events as a group, and have coffee and dinner together. Depending on the interests of our members and funding, we may have workshops or editing pairs later on -- and put together a small chapbook.  Our faculty advisor, Lawrence Minh-Bui Davis, has a great deal of experience in this field and will help us along the way.

If this sounds like something you'd be interested in, please contact Alice Lu at alicelu7@umd.edu or Radhika Tyagi at coolicecream12@gmail.com
