Summer Internship/Research Asst.



Position:              Undergraduate Internship (unpaid, for credit) – SUMMER/FALL 2014

Title:                    Research Assistant

Duties:                 The intern’s primary responsibilities will be to assist with conducting local substance abuse prevention needs assessments and program evaluations. These projects were implemented as a part of local initiatives to prevent underage drinking, substance abuse, and risky sexual behavior. CESAR staff work with local coalitions and prevention staff to complete a five step process to build community capacity, identify local priorities and needs and more efficiently identify, implement, and evaluate evidence-based programs and policies. Specific duties include:

  • Assist with development of local data collection instruments
  • Data entry (using Access or SPSS) for responses from student and community surveys
  • Review local data and develop tables/spreadsheets/graphics  
  • Assist with preparation of needs assessment reports, strategic plan documents, logic models, evaluation reports, etc.
  • Attend project meetings
  • Assist with other projects such as analysis of data for a urinalysis study and preparing grant proposals
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications:   This candidate must have advanced organizational skills, as well as excellent written and verbal communication skills. Additionally, he/she should be comfortable making telephone and in-person contacts with local agency staff and analyzing and writing up local data. Preferred skills: Knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel. Experience with Access or a statistical program such as SPSS is a plus.

Compensation:    This is an unpaid internship open to undergraduate students to gain academic experience and/or may be used to earn BSOS, HLTH, or CRIM internship credit (3-6 credits).
